I Analyzed 50+ SaaS Pricing Pages — Here's What I Found

I spent two weeks clicking through pricing pages so you don't have to. Price anchoring, fake urgency, free tier traps, per-seat chaos — here's what's actually going on.

A few weeks ago, I had a simple question: why do SaaS pricing pages feel so exhausting?

You know the feeling. You land on a pricing page. There are three columns with intentionally confusing names ("Starter," "Growth," "Business" — or worse, "Basic," "Pro," "Team"). One column is clearly highlighted as "Most Popular." The prices seem reasonable until you notice they're per seat, per month, billed annually only. And somewhere in the fine print, there's an overage charge you'll definitely hit.

So I started clicking. I looked at 50+ SaaS pricing pages across categories: project management, email marketing, CRM, analytics, developer tools, subscription management. I took notes on what they were doing and why.

Here's what I found.


Pattern 1: The Decoy Tier

Almost every pricing page has three tiers. Almost always, the middle tier is the target.

This isn't accidental. It's a psychological tactic called "compromise effect" — when presented with three options, people naturally gravitate toward the middle. It feels safe. Not cheap, not extravagant. Just... reasonable.

The trick is that the bottom tier is designed to be genuinely inadequate. It has just enough features to seem real, but limits that make it impractical: "Up to 2 team members," "1,000 contacts only," "No integrations." You'd hit these limits in week two.

The top tier exists to make the middle tier feel affordable by comparison. If the top tier is $499/month, suddenly $149/month seems like a bargain — even if $149 is steep for what you're actually getting.

The bottom tier is a decoy. The top tier is an anchor. The middle tier is the sale.

What to do: Ignore the visual hierarchy. Actually read each tier's feature list against your specific needs, not what the page design is pushing you toward.


Pattern 2: "Per Seat" Pricing That Scales Into Absurdity

I found this in roughly 60% of the B2B tools I looked at.

You sign up as a solo founder. The tool is $30/month. Fine. Six months later, you hire a VA. $60/month. You bring on a contractor. $90/month. You add a part-time team member. $120/month.

At what point did you accidentally sign up for a $120/month subscription to a tool you originally evaluated at $30?

Per-seat pricing makes sense when the tool genuinely delivers value proportional to each additional user (like a communication tool where every message sent matters). It makes much less sense for tools where the underlying infrastructure cost doesn't actually scale with users.

For subscription businesses under $50k MRR — newsletter operators, coaches, course sellers — per-seat pricing is almost always a trap. You're optimizing for a team that doesn't exist yet.

What to do: When evaluating per-seat tools, calculate the price at your realistic 12-month team size, not your current team size.


Pattern 3: Annual Billing as the Default

I noticed this in 43 of the 50+ pages I looked at: the pricing shown prominently is the annual billing price. "Just $29/month!" — and then in smaller text: "billed annually at $348."

That's not $29/month. That's $348 upfront.

The psychology here is straightforward: the monthly number looks small, and people anchor to it. The annual commitment feels like a "deal" (they usually offer 10-20% off). But what you're actually signing is a full-year contract for a tool you might hate by month two.

Yearly commitments make sense for tools you've already validated. They're a trap for tools you're evaluating.

What to do: Always toggle to monthly pricing first. Validate the tool works for your situation. Then consider annual if you're still happy at 60-90 days.


Pattern 4: The Free Tier That Isn't Really Free

"Free forever!" sounds good until you read what "free" means.

The free tier pattern I saw most often:

  • Generous enough to get you hooked on the product
  • Limited in exactly the feature that becomes critical for your use case
  • Requires a credit card "to verify your account" even for the free tier
  • Has a hard limit that you'll hit predictably after a few weeks

The most common hard limits I saw: number of contacts, number of emails per month, number of projects, number of integrations.

These aren't arbitrary. They're engineered. The product team analyzed where in the product lifecycle users realize they really need it — and put the limit there.

None of this is necessarily evil. Free tiers cost money to run, and companies need conversion to survive. But going in with open eyes helps: "free" usually means "free until the moment you actually rely on this."

What to do: Before starting a free tier, ask yourself: "At what point would I need to upgrade, and what does upgrade cost?" If you can't find out, that's a red flag.


Pattern 5: The Price That Doesn't Include the Price

This one bothered me the most.

I found multiple tools where the displayed price was genuinely the starting price — but the thing you actually need to use the product isn't included.

Examples I found:

  • Email tool: $29/month base, but transactional emails cost extra per thousand sends
  • Analytics tool: $49/month, but data retention beyond 30 days is an add-on
  • Subscription management: $250/month, but "recovered revenue percentage" fee on top

That last one is notable: some churn recovery tools charge you both a monthly subscription and a percentage of the revenue their tool helps you keep. So you're paying for the tool, and then paying again for every dollar it earns you.

It's not illegal. It's just... a choice. And it means the "price" on the pricing page is not actually the price you'll pay.

What to do: Before committing to any tool, ask specifically: "Is there anything charged separately that isn't shown on this pricing page?" Reputable tools will give you a straight answer.


Pattern 6: Feature Gating That Doesn't Track

I'm going to call this one out specifically because it's become a genre.

There's a class of features that you'd reasonably expect to be available on any paid plan — things like basic API access, CSV export, or (in one memorable case) "the ability to see which team members did what." These are table-stakes features, not premium ones.

On multiple pricing pages, I found these kinds of features locked to the highest tier. Not because they're expensive to provide — they're not. But because feature gating at the top tier is how you force large customers to pay large prices.

The problem is the same as the Churnkey problem: this logic makes sense when your customers are enterprises. It doesn't make sense when small businesses are using the same pricing page.

One tool I looked at locked "CSV export" to the $300/month tier. The feature literally just exports data to a spreadsheet. It costs nothing to implement beyond the initial dev work, and it probably takes a quarter-second of compute to run. Charging $300/month for it isn't pricing strategy. It's extraction.


What This Means for Small Subscription Businesses

If you're running a newsletter, a coaching program, a course membership, or a small SaaS, you're the customer these pricing pages weren't designed for.

The structure was built for companies with 10+ person teams, multi-department workflows, and enterprise procurement processes. The pricing anchored to that reality. You're buying from a menu that wasn't written for you.

That creates real risk: you either overpay for features you don't need, or you go without tools that could genuinely help you grow.

You can use that knowledge. When you land on a pricing page, slow down. Read the actual feature list. Calculate the real cost at your real team size. Toggle to monthly. Ask about what's not shown.
